Known issues
Installation Sparky via Calamares (Sparky Installer):
– the full disk encryption in autopartitioning mode is temporary disabled, due to a problem with generating a cryptkey
– encrypting other dirs than root, such as: home, data, etc. in manual mode is possible.

Sparky 5.7~dev20190203

There are development live/install media of Sparky 5.7 20190203 of the rolling line available for testing.

The new iso images features improved Advanced Installed which provides a bug fixing around wrong detecting partitions.

If a number of partitions you have is bigger than 9, and if you choose the first partition as the first choice (swap partition on Bios machines; UEFI partition on machines with UEFI motherboard), sda1 for expample, the installer cut out from a next window all of existing partition with the number starting you already choosen (sda1 – sda10, sda11, sda12, etc.).

So they are not visible in Installer window and can not be used for installing Sparky.

‘sparky-backup-core’ 20190203 features a fix for that issue so your existing iso image can be used anyway, if you update the package in the live system.

The second change is about the Linux kernel – the present iso images are shipped with Debian Linux kernel back as default.

Please test the new images and report whatever you find.

The issue has been found by guy under ‘The Operating System World’ nick name – thank’s a lot!

New development iso images can be found at download/development page.

Sparky 4.9.1 & 5.6.1

Sparky iso images of both lines stable and rolling have been rebuild and updated.
This is a minor but important update which provides new settings of Sparky repositories.

No system reinstallation is required of existing Sparky installations, simply make full system upgrade:
sudo apt update
sudo apt install sparky-apt
sudo apt update
sudo apt full-upgrade

Additionally, Sparky of the rolling line 5.6.1 is shipped with Linux kernel 4.20.0 as default and Python 3.7 (3.6 has been already removed)

If you would like to install a new desktop via older MinimalGUI/CLI iso images (=< 4.9 / =< 5.6) you have to upgrade the 'sparky-apt' package in live system before starting the Advanced Installer.

Sparky 5.5

There are new live/install iso images of SparkyLinux 5.5 “Nibiru” available to download.
Sparky 5 follows rolling release model and is based on Debian testing “Buster”.

Changes:
– system updated from Debian testing repos as of September 17, 2018
– Linux kernel 4.18.6 (4.18.8- & 4.19-rc4-sparky are available at Sparky “unstable” repos)
– the Calamares installer updated up to version 3.2.1
– Thunar daemon is deactiveted in the MinimalGUI Live (Openbox), due to problem of automounting new partitions created by Calamares
– GCC 7 compiler has been removed, the system uses GCC 8 as default
– removed packages: libpam-gnome-keyring, vim, imagemagick, systemd-ui, sparky-gexec, xterm (Openbox)
– also removed from LXQt media: lxtask, leafpad, notepqdqq
– added new packages: seahorse, rxvt-unicode (Openbox), qps (LXQt), featherpad (LXQt)
– the Calamares and Advanced Installer remove Cryptsetup packages now (Calamares removes the packages if the system is not installed on an encrypted disk/partition)
– a terminal emulator used by Sparky tools has been changed from xterm to rxvt-unicode with pseudotransparency (Openbox), thank’s to lami07
– small fixes

The live system of MinimalGUI/CLI uses Debian’s Linux kernel 4.18.6 as default.
The live system of LXQt, due to a problem with long loading the desktop, features Sparky’s Linux kernel 4.18.8 (32bit pae/64bit amd64) as default; and the Debian’s one as well.

If you would like to boot the LXQt live system using the Debian kernel 4.18.6, edit the live boot list and change:
'vmlinuz' to 'vmlinuz418'
and
'initrd.img' to 'initrd418.img'

New iso images can be downloaded from download/rolling page.

Sparky 5.5 dev20180726

There are new testing iso images of SparkyLinux 5.5-dev20180726 available to download.
Sparky 5 follows rolling release model and is based on Debian testing “Buster”.

ISO images of Sparky 5.5-dev20180726 provide new features to be tested which will be available in the next Sparky release.

Changes:
– system update from Debian testing repos as of July 26, 2018
– Linux kernel 4.17.8 (4.17.10-sparky is available in Sparky “unstable” repo)
– older Linux kernel 4.16.12 is available from live media as well, which can be used in a case of any problem with the newest one
– added support of btrfs & xfs file systems in Advanced Installer – installation on btrfs installs the system in subvolumes: @ and @home; choosing a separate partition for home makes the @home subvolume as well; it lets you make a snapshot of your system partitions via the btrfs utility or via TimeShift appliacation and lets you recovery them later
– added new tool: TimeShift
– added new, own tool: DEBiTool, which replaced GDebi and can be used for installing deb packages from a local drive
– improved configuration of removing live packages in Advanced Installer; sudo package is not removed now if you install Sparky using minimalcli iso image

The live system uses Linux kernel 4.17.x as default.
If you would like to boot the live system using an older kernel of the 4.16.x line, edit the live boot list and change:
'vmlinuz' to 'vmlinuz416'
and
'initrd.img' to 'initrd416.img'

New development iso images can be downloaded from download/devlopment page.
The iso images are a little bigger than before – every one features 2 Linux kernels.

Please test it and report whatever you find.

Sparky 5.1

There are new live/install iso images of SparkyLinux 5.1 “Nibiru” available to download.
Sparky 5 follows the rolling release model and is based on Debian testing “Buster”.

Sparky “Home” edition provides fully featured operating system with lightweight desktops: Xfce, MATE and LXQt.
Sparky MinimalGUI (Openbox) and MinimalCLI (text mode) lets you install the base system with a desktop of your choice and a minimal set of applications via the Sparky Advanced Installer.

Changes between version 5.0 and 5.1:
– full system upgrade from Debian testing repos as of September 25, 2017

– added new tool for installing a web browser: Sparky Web Browser Installer
– new desktop environment added to Sparky repos: Manokwari
– live system’s memtest86+ issue has been fixed
– source code repos moved to GitHub

No system re-installation is required, simply make full system upgrade:
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get dist-upgrade

If any problem, run:
sudo dpkg --configure -a
sudo apt-get install -f

New iso images of the rolling edition can be downloaded from download/rolling page.

Sparky 4.5.4 MinimalGUI/CLI

There is a minor update of Sparky MinimalGUI and MinimalCLI 4.5.4.

Sparky “Full (Home)” editions are installed as they are, with no need of updating or installing extra packages from the repositories.

MinimalGUI and MinimalCLI editions are shipped with current versions of packages, but they are current when the iso images were built only. After a week, month, and so the base system is out of date. It is not a problem until you’d like to install different desktop via Sparky Advanced Installer.

The point is, sometimes, installing new versions of some packages on the top of older version of base system can make problems…

Our community member reported such issue installing Enlightenment via MinimalGUI iso. The older version of systemd did not want to run just installed connman service, so the internet connection couldn’t be done automatically.

I posted on our forums, how to fix it manually, but it is temporary solution:
https://sparkylinux.org/forum/index.php?topic=3870.msg9303
So, looks like the Minimal iso images should be updated much often then the Full Editions, I think…

Anyway, the new iso images of Sparky 4.5.4 Minimal provide all packages updated as of February 22, 2017, Debian’s Linux kernel 4.9 (Sparky’s 4.10 is ready in our repos), and some small improvements.

SparkyLinux 4.5.1 MinimalGUI

There is an update of Sparky 4.5.1 MinimalGUI available to download.

The Sparky Advanced Installer doesn’t work as it should in the MinimaGUI edition, if you are trying to install an additional desktop. The installer calls a ‘desktop-installer’, but it does not coming back to the main installer with right privileges after. It used to do before, but not any more.

You do not re-install your already installed Sparky.
You can also use existing Sparky 4.5 MinimalGUI iso images, but if you’d like to install a different desktop, run the Advanced Installer from the command line:
sudo sparkylinux-installer gui
or
sudo sparkylinux-installer

The updated MinimalGUI 4.5.1 iso images provide a fix of the small issue.

Live is crazy, anyway…

SparkyLinux 4.5-dev20161106

There is a development iso image of Sparky 4.5-dev20161106 MinimalGUI ready for testing.

The new dev iso image features:
• Linux kernel 4.7 + the latest updates from Debian ‘testing’ repos
• the Calamares installer 2.4.4 with added support of installation on 32 and 64 bit UEFI machines.
• Sparky Advanced Installer which provides support for two more desktops to be installed straight from the live media: CDE (Common Desktop Environment) and DDE (Deepin Desktop Environment)

We (MoroS and me) been working yesterday to make the installer working with UEFI both 32 and 64bit machines, so it can be tested via the latest development iso images already.

MoroS sent his bootloader patch to the Calamares devs, so we have a small part of our help to the Calamares project now 🙂

The development iso images for i686 and x86_64 machines are placed on the download/development page.
Please test it and report whatever you find.

Calamares on SparkyLinux

Known issues:
1. The iso features Linux kernel 4.7, so the VirtualBox needs to have I/O APIC option enabled.
The live systems starts the X server in failsafe mode inside VirtualBox (UEFI mode); BIOS mode – starts, but with problems. To test the iso image in BIOS mode use VMware Workstation, for example, or run it on a “normal” machine.
2. Installing Sparky via the Sparky Advanced Installer with Pantheon desktop – the ‘wingpanel’ doesn’t start due to newer version of GNOME libs.
