Sparky 5.11

A quarterly update point release of live/install media of Sparky 5.11 “Nibiru” of the stable line is out. This is a release based on Debian 10 “Buster”.

Changes:
– the base system upgraded from Debian stable repos as of March 1, 2020
– Linux kernel 4.19.98 LTS (PC)
– Linux kernel 4.19.97 LTS (ARMHF)
– added 9 new nature wallpapers captured by Aneta, Pavbaranov and me
– Sparky repository changed to the named “nibiru” (“stable” works as before); no need to manually change the repo; see also: https://sparkylinux.org/sparky-named-repos/
– Firefox 68.6.0 ESR
– Thunderbird 68.6.0
– LibreOffice 6.1.5

System reinstallation is not required; if you have Sparky 5.x installed make full system upgrade:

sparky-upgrade

or:

sudo apt update
sudo apt full-upgrade

or via the System Upgrade tool.

Sparky 5 is available in the following flavours:
– amd64 & i686: LXQt, Xfce, MinimalGUI (Openbox) & MinimalCLI (text mode)
– armhf: Openbox & CLI (text mode)

Sparky 2020.03.1

New iso images of Sparky 2020.03.1 of the (semi-)rolling line have been generated.

This is a minor update of the live/install media which provides:

• fixed issue which doesn’t let you boot Sparky 2020.03 copied to an USB stick
• Sparky repository changed to the named “potolo” (“testing” works as before)
• all packages updated from Debian testing repos as of March 27, 2020

No reinstallation is required, simply make full system upgrade.

New rolling iso images can be downloaded from the download/rolling page.

Sparky 2020.03

The March 2020 snapshot of Sparky 2020.03 “Po Tolo” of the (semi-)rolling line is out. It is based on the Debian testing “Bullseye”.

Changes:
– system upgraded from Debian testing repos as of March 7, 2020
– Calamares installer 3.2.20
– Linux kernel 5.4.19 as default (5.5.8 & 5.6-rc4 in Sparky unstable repos)
– changed qCamera webcam application to Cheese
– changed Vokoscreen to Vokoscreen-NG
– removed packages: radiotray, imagemagic
– GCC 10 is preinstalled, alongside to GCC 9 (default)
– LibreOffice 6.4.1.2
– Firefox 73.0.1

System reinstallation is not required, make full system upgrade via Sparky Upgrade gui tool or a text based tool:

Sparky 2020.02.1

Sparky 2020.02.1 “Po Tolo” of the (semi-)rolling line is out. It is based on the testing branch of Debian “Bullseye”.

This is a minor update, which temporary fixes a problem of installing Sparky via Calamares with kpmcore 4.

Changes between Sparky 2020.02 and 2020.02.1:
• system upgraded from Debian testing repos as of February 13, 2020
• kpmcore downgraded to version 3.3.0
• Calamares installer rebuild using libkpmcore7 3.3.0

No system reinstallation is required, simply keep Sparky up to date.

New rolling iso images can be downloaded from the download/rolling page.

Sparky 2020.02

Sparky 2020.02 “Po Tolo” of the (semi-)rolling line is out. It is based on the testing branch of Debian “Bullseye”.

Changes:
* system upgraded from Debian testing “Bullseye” repos as of February 9, 2020
* Calamares installer 3.2.18
* Linux kernel 5.4.13 as default (5.5.2 & 5.6-rc1 in Sparky unstable repos)
* Firefox 72.0.2

* added the new Sparky public key

System reinstallation is not required, install the new Sparky public key as follows:

Known issues:
* Calamares installer failed if you install Sparky in full auto mode with full disk encryption and a swap partiton; it works fine without a swap partition;

Sparky 5.10

A quarterly update of live/install media of Sparky 5.10 “Nibiru” of the stable line is out. This release is based on Debian 10 “Buster”.

– the base system has been upgraded from Debian stable repos as of January 10, 2020
– Linux kernel 4.19.67-2+deb10u1 LTS (PC)
– Linux kernel 4.19.75-v7+ (ARMHF)
– Chromium web browser changed to Firefox-ESR (ARMHF)
– small bug fixes and small improvements

System reinstallation is not required; if you have Sparky 5.9 installed make full system upgrade:

There are new live/install media of Sparky 2019.12 “Po Tolo” available to download, which is based on the testing branch of Debian “Bullseye”.

Goals:
• system upgraded from Debian testing “Bullseye” repos as of December 1, 2019
• Calamares installer 3.2.17
• Linux kernel 5.3.9 as default (5.4.1 & 5.3.14 in Sparky unstable repos)

No reinstallation is required if you have Sparky 2019.xx (of the line 6) installed, simply make full system upgrade.

New rolling iso images can be downloaded from the download/rolling page.

Known issues:
• encryption mode only – it works if you don’t use swap partition (automated partitioning on virtual machine tested only)

 

Sparky 2019.11

There are new live/install media of Sparky 2019.11 “Po Tolo” available to download, which is based on the testing branch of Debian “Bullseye”.

Goals:
• system upgraded from Debian testing “Bullseye” repos as of November 2, 2019
• Calamares installer 3.2.16 + kpmcore 4
• Linux kernel 5.2.17 as default (5.3.8 & 5.4-rc5 in Sparky unstable repos)
• obmenu-generator removed from Openbox edition (due to Perl updated up to 5.30 and libgtk2-perl removed); it has been replaced by sparky-obmenu (+obmenu)
• added Sid repos back (not active) – use it on your own risk
• Yad updated up to 5.0, but it is available from Sparky unstable repos now

No reinstallation is required if you have Sparky 2019.xx (of the line 6) installed, simply make full system upgrade.

Known issues (encryption mode only):
• I performed a few tests with different partition combinations with the Calamares installer on an encrypted device – it works if I don’t use swap partition (automated partitioning on virtual machine tested only)

 

Sparky 2019.09

There are new live/install media of Sparky 2019.09 “Po Tolo” available to download. This is the 2nd snapshot of the (semi-)rolling line, which is based on the testing branch of Debian “Bullseye”.

Changes:
• system upgraded from Debian testing “Bullseye” repos as of September 1, 2019
• fixed issue in Advanced Installer which did not set home partition on non-root partition with no-formatting option (thank’s lami07)
• Firefox-ESR replaced with Firefox Latest
• GCC 9 is the default compiler now, GCC 8 removed
• Calamares installer 3.2.13
• Linux kernel 5.2.9 (5.2.11 & 5.3-rc6 available in Sparky unstable repos)
• Xfce 4.14
• LXQt 0.14.1
• Openbox 3.6.1-8

No reinstallation is required if you have Sparky 2019.08 (of the line 6) installed, simply make full system upgrade.

Know issues:
– upgrading Xfce desktop to the latest version 4.14 lost some desktop settings (wallpaper) so set it back after rebooting.

 

Sparky 2019.08

There are new live/install media of SparkyLinux 2019.08 “Po Tolo” available to download. This is the 1st snapshot of the new (semi-)rolling line, which is based on the testing branch of Debian “Bullseye”.

Changes:
• system updated from Debian testing “Bullseye” repos as of August 1, 2019
• added gcc 9 (gcc 8 is still the default one)
• new Sparky6 theme
• new Tela icon set
• refreshed desktop look
• sddm instead of lightdm (LXQt edition)
• Linux kernel 4.19.37 (5.1.21 EOL, 5.2.5 & 5.3-rc2 available at Sparky unstable repos)

As I mentioned before, Sparky of the rolling line is available to amd64/x86_64 machines only. Sparky rolling 32 bit is fully supported so if you have it, simply keep it up to date.

System reinstallation is not required.
If you have Sparky rolling installed:
• make sure your OS uses Debian ‘testing’ repos
• change Sparky repos to ‘testing’ if your OS uses ‘stable’ repo already
• make full system upgrade:
sudo apt update
sudo apt install sparky6-apt
sudo apt update
sudo apt full-upgrade

New 64bit rolling iso images of Sparky Xfce, LXQt, MinimalGUI & MinimalCLI can be downloaded from the download/rolling page.
