SparkyLinux – full USB stick installation

SparkyLinux has gotten a new functionality – full installation on USB stick.
It means that you can do “normal” system installation, similar to the hard drive installation.
Key features:
– don’t need to cut your hard drive any more
– it’s possible to save your personal files, perform system upgrades, install new apps – everything on USB stick
– the USB system (for me) is still fast and light

The feature is available at coming SparkyLinux 2.1 rc “Eris” LXDE/e17 and any next one.

How to install SparkyLinux on Pen/Flash Drive?
1. You need 8GB USB stick (minimum) for “Eris” edition.
2. Read SparkyLinux 2.x hard drive installation guide.
The USB installation is in 90 % exactly the same as hard drive installation.
3. Put your attention on a few points of installation process:

§ 10. Choose USB disk (for example: /dev/sdb) instead of hard drive disk (/dev/sda).

SparkyLinux instalacja na USB

§ 11. Preper minimum two partitions on USB drive for:
– / – root dir
– swap partition
You can make one more partition for”/home” folder.

SparkyLinux instalacja na USB

§ 12. Choose partition for SWAP on USB drive (sdb2).

SparkyLinux instalacja na USB

§ 13. Choose root partition on USB drive too (sdb1).

SparkyLinux instalacja na USB

§ 18. The most important – GRUB bootloader destination – “rootmbr”.

SparkyLinux instalacja na USB

§ 20. Check all settings for new installation:
– partition “sdb1” (!) will be formatted for root file system
– GRUB will be installed to the mbr of root partition of “sdb1” (!)

After installation finished reboot your machine and start it from USB drive.

SparkyLinux 2.1 RC “Eris” MATE Edition

SparkyLinux 2.1 RC “Eris” MATE Edition is out.

The system is built as all 2.x releases on Debian testing “Wheezy”.

Changes between 2.1 MATE beta1 and RC:
– SparkyLinux 2.0, 2.0.1 and 2.1 MATE beta 1 (Live) contain an error that prevents wireless network configuration, partition mounting and switching between Live desktops (e17/LXDE and Ultra Fluxbox/Openbox 2.1 rc). The error is active when you run the iso from USB stick.
2.1 RC MATE is free of the error so it means that hybrid iso will be working now well from DVD media and USB drive.
– all packages have been upgraded as usually from Debian testing repo
– Opera web browser’s public key has been added – Opera can be installed now via package manager
– added ConkyEdit menu activator
– added new LaGaDesk-BlackWhite icon set – it’s not default
– 64 bit version is available too
– removed two problematic packages (64bit only) (Ultra)

If you downloading via BitTorrent, please seed – I have limited access to the network.

Many thanks for:
– MATE Edition beta 1 testing and bugs reporting for everyone and
– new icon set and consulting for Albedo 0.64

SparkyLinux 2.1 beta1 “Eris” MATE Edition

SparkyLinux 2.1 beta1 “Eris” MATE Edition is ready for testing.
The system is built as all 2.x releases on Debian testing “Wheezy”.
MATE is a fork of GNOME 2 desktop environment.

A few years ago, when I started my adventure with Linux, GNOME 2 was my favorite graphical interface. “Evolutionary” changes of GNOME 3 completely discouraged me to it. But I found a big potential in other desktops – Xfce, e17, LXDE and Openbox.
But the sentiment remained.
My hope revived with MATE, I have been following its development almost from the beginning.
Today MATE is in very good condition so I decided to restore the glory of GNOME 2 for myself (and others).
SparkyLinux MATE Edition features the same set of applications, codecs and other tools that included in the main version “Eris”.
The desktop is very traditional, there is only one exception – Wbar launcher.
I am very conservative with that.

What’s under the hood:
– Linux kernel 3.2.0-4
– mate-core 1.4.0
– mate-desktop 1.4.2-1
– iceweasel 10.0.12
– icedove 10.0.11-1
– brasero 3.4.1
– cups 1.5.3
– exaile
– gimp 2.8.2
– gparted 0.12.1
– libreoffice 3.5.4
– mplayer 2.0
– network-manager 0.9.4
– openjdk 7u3
– pidgin 2.10.6
– vlc 2.0.5
– wine 1.4.1

SparkyLinux 2.1 b1 MATE is available for 32 bit machines.
64 bit release will be published as RC after fixing first bugs.

Root password is blank.
If you have to work as superuser, use “sudo” (with no password):
sudo app-name

sudo su

To set up Live system’s root password:
sudo su

To install SparkyLinux on hard drive, run “SparkyLinux hard drive installer” icon (with GUI).
To run text mode installer, type:
sudo sparkylinux-installer

Minimum hardware requirements for “Ultra Edition”:
– CPU i386 or x86_64
– RAM memory 384 MB
– SWAP partition 512 MB
– DVD drive or USB Flash Disk
– for hard drive installation 5GB of disk space (minimum) – 10GB recommended

Test SparkyLinux and report any bug please.
If you downloading via BitTorrent, please seed – I have limited access to the network.
