HowTo: Install JDownloader and synchronize it with Iceweasel

JDownloader is an open-source download manager written in Java.
The last stable version 0.9.x has been released in 2011, but it’s possible to try a testing version of the manager 2.x.

JDownloader Installer package (deb) is in SparkyLinux repository now and can be installed via the package manager: APT, Synaptic or Sparky-APTus-Extra.

The script will download the installer from the project server and will install JDownloader in your operating system.

Installer

Settings

After the installation process is finished you can synchronize JDownloader with Iceweasel web browser via FlashGot plugin. Install the plugin via the web browser plugin manager if you haven’t installed it yet.

FlashGot

Go to the plugin settings if you have installed FlashGot already.
It’s possible that JDowloader will NOT be available to choose as the default download manager.

FlashGot

In a case like that, use “Add” button and type a name for the manager, such as:
“JDownloader-custom”

FlashGot

Now choose the executable file of JDownloader from:

/usr/bin/jdownloader

JDownloader

As the last step go to the “Media FlashGot” tab and choose download manager:
“Default (JDownloader-custom)”.

JDownloader

Now you can close the FlashGot settings window.
JDownloader has been installed and synchronized with the web browser.

SparkyLinux 3.2.1 Xfce is out

3…2…1… Go!

SparkyLinux 3.2.1 Xfce is based on the last release 3.2 “Annagerman” and it’s fully compatible with Debian testing “Jessie”.

Sparky Xfce has gotten a few new features, which will be added to the next Sparky release.
So what is under the hood?

– Iceweasel has been synchronised with uGet via FlashGot addon – downloading big files never been so easy
– added microblogging client Hotot
– Whisker Menu is preinstalled but not active – I am a traditional man, so the traditional Xfce menu is what I need. Anyway, the Whisker Menu can be found in the panel’s applet box.

Sparky Xfce iso images have been compressed using ‘xz’ compression. It is 300 MB about smaller then normal. Live system can be loaded a few seconds longer so I need your feedback:
Does stronger compression make any different of Live system work/speed?

Wine has been upgraded up to version 1.6 but disappeared from the application menu.
Use PlayOnLinux if you’d like to install ‘.exe’ applications.
