2. Sparky Live text mode
If you have an old computer with small amount of RAM memory, you can run Sparky Installer in text mode with no X Server. To do that, choose “SparkyLinux text mode” from startup menu and run the installer:
sudo sparkylinux-installer

I do not know what is the minimum system requirements to run the text installer with no X.
The smallest power I have used on virtual machine to do testing installation was:
– CPU 720 MHz
– RAM memory 128 MB

SparkyLinux – full USB stick installation

SparkyLinux has gotten a new functionality – full installation on USB stick.
It means that you can do “normal” system installation, similar to the hard drive installation.
Key features:
– don’t need to cut your hard drive any more
– it’s possible to save your personal files, perform system upgrades, install new apps – everything on USB stick
– the USB system (for me) is still fast and light

The feature is available at coming SparkyLinux 2.1 rc “Eris” LXDE/e17 and any next one.

How to install SparkyLinux on Pen/Flash Drive?
1. You need 8GB USB stick (minimum) for “Eris” edition.
2. Read SparkyLinux 2.x hard drive installation guide.
The USB installation is in 90 % exactly the same as hard drive installation.
3. Put your attention on a few points of installation process:

§ 10. Choose USB disk (for example: /dev/sdb) instead of hard drive disk (/dev/sda).

SparkyLinux instalacja na USB

§ 11. Preper minimum two partitions on USB drive for:
– / – root dir
– swap partition
You can make one more partition for”/home” folder.

SparkyLinux instalacja na USB

§ 12. Choose partition for SWAP on USB drive (sdb2).

SparkyLinux instalacja na USB

§ 13. Choose root partition on USB drive too (sdb1).

SparkyLinux instalacja na USB

§ 18. The most important – GRUB bootloader destination – “rootmbr”.

SparkyLinux instalacja na USB

§ 20. Check all settings for new installation:
– partition “sdb1” (!) will be formatted for root file system
– GRUB will be installed to the mbr of root partition of “sdb1” (!)

After installation finished reboot your machine and start it from USB drive.

SparkyLinux 2.0 “Eris”

The final version of SparkyLinux 2.0 “Eris” e17/LXDE just arrived.
The system has been completely built on Debian testing “Wheezy”.

The default desktop is as usually Enlightenment, but there is (at the same media) LXDE desktop as well. It has been added for these users witch are not happy with e17.
Both system’s desktops are light and fast, perfect works on new and old machines.
I’d like to add that SparkyLinux 1.0 “Venus” based on Debian “Squeeze” is not under development any more.
All my attention I paid (and i will do later) to SparkyLinux compatible with Debian testing.
It will help to keep SparkyLinux as rolling release so it will not be needed to reinstall SparkyLinux to newer version releases as new iso media in the future.

All known bugs has been fixed.
I have been made a few additional changes:
– parcellite and qt4-qtconfig added
– a view of all app’s windows are now the same (e17, gtk i qt)
– fonts hinting changed for “medium” (LXDE desktop)
– all packages have been upgraded

Live system starts with LXDE desktop first.
To change it for Enlightenment simply log out and log in back :
user: live
password: live
Root password is empty.

Hardware requirements for SparkyLinux 2.x :
– CPU 32 bit i386 (or newer)
– CPU 64 bit x86_64
– RAM memory 256MB (minimum) + 512MB SWAP
– RAM 512MB (recommended) or bigger + 512-1024 SWAP
– DVD drive or Flash Disk USB
– screen resolution 800×600 minimum
– for hard drive installation 5GB of disk space (minimum) – 10GB recommended

ISO images of SparkyLinux 32 and 64 bit are ready for download from our download page.

Thank’s for suggestions, advices and testing for Albedo 0.64, AlbatroZ and MoroS.

SparkyLinux 2.0 alpha1

Informacja o wydaniu w języku polskim -> https://linuxiarze.pl/sparkylinux-2-0-alpha1/

I am pleased to inform that we have started working with SparkyLinux 2.
The effect of our work is the first testing release alpha1 code name “Eris”.

Eris is a planet in the Solar System. It was discovered in January 2005 by a Palomar Observatory-based team led by Mike Brown.

SparkyLinux 2.0 alpha1 “Eris” has been completely built from scratch using Debian testing “Wheezy” packages and is 100% compatible with it. This alpha release will demonstrate the look and feel of the new version of the system.

Live system works quite well with no big problems.
If you have to restart X server and log in back, use:
user: live
password: live

Live installer has been removed from the menu – it needs to be improved.

SparkyLinux 2.0 alpha1 featuring packages such as :
– Linux kernel 3.2.21-3
– e17 0.16.999.70492-2
– Xorg 7.7+1
– alsa-base 1.0.23
– pulseaudio 2.0.-3
– PCManFM 0.9.10-3
– GNOME-MPlayer 1.0.6-1
– MPlayer 2.0~git20120707
– LXmusic 0.4.4+git20100802
– Iceweasel 10.0.6esr-1
– Network-Manager 0.9.4.0-5

Remember that the system does not have all applications (similar to SparkyLinux 1.0 Full) but has only several apps. Bigger number of apps take the work with new iso much longer.

Your suggestions and bugs can be report at our forum (in Polish) :
