Sparky 5.6.1 Special Editions

There are new live/install iso images of SparkyLinux 5.6.1 “Nibiru” GameOver, Multimedia & Rescue available to download. Sparky 5 follows rolling release model and is based on Debian testing “Buster”.

GameOver Edition features a very large number of preinstalled games, useful tools and scripts. It’s targeted to gamers.

Multimedia Edition features a large set of tools for creating and editing graphics, audio, video and HTML pages.

The live system of Rescue Edition contains a large set of tools for scanning and fixing files, partitions and operating systems installed on hard drives.

Changes:
– system updated from Debian testing repos as of January 2, 2019
– Linux kernel 4.20.0
– the Calamares installer 3.2.1
– added Sparky new repos configuration
– /etc/shadow has right owner and chmod in live session and after installing Sparky on a hard drive now
– added packages: xfce4-notifyd, xfce4-power-manager, sparky-fileopen
– thunar daemon is enabled as default
– many other small fixes

32 bit iso images are shipped with Linux kernel i686-pae.

System reinstallation is not required. If you have Sparky 5.x installed, simply install the latest version of ‘sparky-apt’ package, then make full system upgrade to be working in the latest version.

Sparky 4.9.1 & 5.6.1

Sparky iso images of both lines stable and rolling have been rebuild and updated.
This is a minor but important update which provides new settings of Sparky repositories.

No system reinstallation is required of existing Sparky installations, simply make full system upgrade:
sudo apt update
sudo apt install sparky-apt
sudo apt update
sudo apt full-upgrade

Additionally, Sparky of the rolling line 5.6.1 is shipped with Linux kernel 4.20.0 as default and Python 3.7 (3.6 has been already removed)

If you would like to install a new desktop via older MinimalGUI/CLI iso images (=< 4.9 / =< 5.6) you have to upgrade the 'sparky-apt' package in live system before starting the Advanced Installer.

 

Sparky 5.6

There are new live/install iso images of SparkyLinux 5.6 “Nibiru” available to download. This it the 4th and the last this year iso image update of the rolling line, which is based on Debian testing “Buster”.

Changes:
– system updated from Debian testing repos as of December 16, 2018
– Linux kernel 4.19.9 (4.19.10 & 4.20-rc7 available at Sparky “unstable” repos)
– the Calamares installer 3.2.1
– many small fixes

Changes of small window managers configuration (can be installed via Minimal iso images or APTus):
– a previous sound applet changed by pnmixer
– PCManFM file manager changed by Thunar
– added packages: xfce4-notifyd, xfce4-power-manager, sparky-fileopen
– thunar daemon is enabled as default

32 bit iso images are shipped with Linux kernel i686-pae now. If you have an old machine with 32 non-pae CPU – I recommend to use Sparky stable i686.
System reinstallation is not required. If you have Sparky 5.x installed, simply make full system upgrade to be working in the latest version.

Sparky 4.9 celebrates 100 years of Poland’s Independence

New live/install iso images of SparkyLinux 4.9 “Tyche” are available to download.
Sparky 4 is based on Debian stable line “Stretch” and built around the Openbox window manager.

Sparky 4.9 offers a fully featured operating system with a lightweight LXDE desktop environment; and minimal images of MinimalGUI (Openbox) and MinimalCLI (text mode) which lets you install the base system with a desktop of your choice with a minimal set of applications, via the Sparky Advanced Installer.

Sparky 4.9 armhf offers a fully featured operating system for single board mini computers RaspberryPi; with the Openbox window manager as default; and a minimal, text mode CLI image to customize it as you like.

Additionally, Sparky 4.9 is offered as a special edition with the code name “100” as well. This is a very special edition, commemorating the 100 anniversary of Poland’s independence. A purpose of it is a memorable stuff which provides some informations about Polish history to users of all the world.

New iso images features security updates and small improvements, such as:

– Linux kernel 4.9.110 (PC)
– Linux kernel 4.14.71 (ARM)
– added key bindings of configuration of monitor brightness (Openbox)
– added key bindings of configuration of system sound (Openbox & LXDE)

Added packages:
– xfce4-power-manager for power management
– sparky-libinput for tap to click configuration for touchpads
– xfce4-notifyd for desktop notifications
– ‘sparky-artwork-nature’ package features 10 more new nature wallpapers of Poland

Changes in the „100” special edition:
– added „sparky100” theme pack, which provides a special background to: desktop, Lightdm login manager, GRUB/ISOLINUX boot manager and Plymouth
– added a sub-menu called „100”, separated in English and Polish, which provides menu entries to Wikipedia, to let you find out about Polish National Independence Day and others, important informations from Polish history as well.

SparkyLinux 4.9 100

There is no need to reinstall existing Sparky installations of 4.x line, simply make full system upgrade.

Sparky 4.9 RC

Sparky 4.9 RC is out and ready for testing.

The time for next stable point release is coming, which is released 2 times per year, so a release candidate has to be published to make sure all the new features work fine.

Changes:
– all packages updated from Debian stable Stretch repository as of October 26, 2018
– many small changes and improvements; many of them have been done as a result of cooperation with lami07; thank’s a lot Szymon and… keep it doing!

Please test it and report whatever you find.

The stable 4.9 point release should be out on November 11.

Sparky 5.5.1 Rescue

The live media of Sparky Rescue Edition is updated up to 5.5.1 which provides minor bugs fixing.

Changes:
– system updated from Debian testing repos as of October 05, 2018
– fixed menu entry of DDRescue-GUI and Gparted
– added new tools: vim, chntpw, sparky-aptus
– reconfigured sparky-remsu tool: changed name of sparky-xterm-exec to sparky-remsu-exec, so it had to be changed in obmenu-generator too. The old name could confuse users so the new one is much proper. The sparky-remsu-exec tool lets run non-sparky tools with root privileges.

– Linux kernel 4.18.6 (4.18.9 & 4.19-rc5 sparky are available at Sparky “unstable” repos)
– the Calamares installer updated up to version 3.2.1
– Thunar daemon is deactiveted in live session, due to problem of automounting new partitions created by Calamares
– removed packages: libpam-gnome-keyring, vim, systemd-ui
– added new packages: seahorse, rxvt-unicode
– the Calamares and Advanced Installer remove Cryptsetup packages now (Calamares removes the packages if the system is not installed on an encrypted disk/partition)
– small fixes

– Linux kernel 4.18.6 (4.18.8- & 4.19-rc4-sparky are available at Sparky “unstable” repos)
– the Calamares installer updated up to version 3.2.1
– Thunar daemon is deactiveted in the MinimalGUI Live (Openbox), due to problem of automounting new partitions created by Calamares
– GCC 7 compiler has been removed, the system uses GCC 8 as default
– removed packages: libpam-gnome-keyring, vim, imagemagick, systemd-ui, sparky-gexec, xterm (Openbox)
– also removed from LXQt media: lxtask, leafpad, notepqdqq
– added new packages: seahorse, rxvt-unicode (Openbox), qps (LXQt), featherpad (LXQt)
– the Calamares and Advanced Installer remove Cryptsetup packages now (Calamares removes the packages if the system is not installed on an encrypted disk/partition)
– a terminal emulator used by Sparky tools has been changed from xterm to rxvt-unicode with pseudotransparency (Openbox), thank’s to lami07
– small fixes

The live system of MinimalGUI/CLI uses Debian’s Linux kernel 4.18.6 as default.
The live system of LXQt, due to a problem with long loading the desktop, features Sparky’s Linux kernel 4.18.8 (32bit pae/64bit amd64) as default; and the Debian’s one as well.

If you would like to boot the LXQt live system using the Debian kernel 4.18.6, edit the live boot list and change:
'vmlinuz' to 'vmlinuz418'
and
'initrd.img' to 'initrd418.img'

New live/install iso images of special editions of SparkyLinux 5.4 “Nibiru”: GameOver, Multimedia & Rescue are out. Sparky 5 follows the rolling release model and is based on Debian testing branch “Buster”.

GameOver Edition features a very large number of preinstalled games, useful tools and scripts. It’s targeted to gamers.

Multimedia Edition features a large set of tools for creating and editing graphics, audio, video and HTML pages.

The live system of Rescue Edition contains a large set of tools for scanning and fixing files, partitions and operating systems installed on hard drives.

This is a quarterly update of Sparky of the rolling line which provides changes such as:

– Linux kernel 4.16.12 (4.17.2 & 4.18-rc1 are available in Sparky ‘unstable’ repo)
– Calamares 3.1.12
– added packages: xinit (provides “startx” command)
– removed packages: gksu
– Firefox ESR removed and replaced by the latest Firefox 60.0.2
– Java web plugin removed; most modern web browsers don’t support the plugin any more
– slightly refreshed appearance of the Tint2 panel
– the default terminal emulator has been changed from XTerm to LXterminal
– added a new, small tool to the panel: Sparky Dashboard which displays all installed applications inside of Yad based fullscreen window

Known issues:
– possible problem with unmounting the live system squashfs if running inside of a virtual machine – ignore, shot the live system down, remove the live media and run your machine normally.

Sparky 5.4

There are new live/install iso images of SparkyLinux 5.4 “Nibiru” available to download.
Sparky 5 follows rolling release model and is based on Debian testing “Buster”.

Sparky 5.4 offers a fully featured operating system with a lightweight LXQt desktop environment; and minimal images of MinimalGUI (Openbox) and MinimalCLI (text mode) which lets you install the base system with a desktop of your choice with a minimal set of applications, via the Sparky Advanced Installer.
All existing other desktops are fully supported, and can be installed via the Minimal iso images or after installing Sparky on a hard drive, via APTus-> Desktop tool.

This is a quarterly update of Sparky of the rolling edition which provides changes such as:
– full system upgrade from Debian testing repos as of June 10, 2018
– Linux kernel 4.16.12 (4.17.0-sparky is available in Sparky ‘unstable’ repo)
– Calamares 3.1.12 (not upgraded to 3.2 yet)
– added packages: xinit (provides “startx” command)
– removed packages: gksu
– Firefox ESR removed and replaced by the latest Firefox 60.0.2 (LXQt edition)
– Java web plugin removed; most modern web browsers don’t support the plugin any more
– Open Java (OpenJDK) removed from the live system too; the package can be installed back via APTus-> Codecs-> OpenJDK
– Clementine music player changed by Yarock; Clementine uses old Qt 4, Yarock uses Qt 5 (LXQt edition)
– slightly refreshed appearance of the Tint2 panel (MinimalGUI edition)
– the Midori web browser is not upgraded for the last 3 years about so has been removed and replaced by an other small and fast Otter Browser (still in RC stage); your favorite web browser can be installed via APTus-> Network
– the default terminal emulator has been changed from XTerm to LXterminal (MinimalGUI edition)
– added a new, small tool to the Tint2 panel: Sparky Dashboard which displays all installed applications inside of Yad based fullscreen window (MinimalGUI edition); and can run them of course.
