There is a new desktop available for Sparkers: COSMIC

What is COSMIC?

COSMIC is a desktop environment offering performance, efficiency, and personalization to empower a wide variety of use cases.

COSMIC desktop is available via Sparky ‘dev’ repositories so the repo has to be enabled to install COSMIC desktop on the top of Sparky 8 stable or testing (9).

It uses the Wayland session as default. The Sparky meta package installs ‘xwayland’ package as default, but some application can not work or launch. That’s why I put the packages to the development repositories so far.

Make sure the COSMIC desktop is available to test but I do not recommend to install it on a production machine yet.

Installation Sparky 8 & testing (9) amd64 only:
sudo apt update
sudo apt install sparky-desktop-cosmic

Then reboot to take effects.
Then choose COSMIC from your login/session manager to log in.

Don't ask, it's me :)

  1. I really look forward to using Cosmic in the future, it looks like a promising new user friendly DE. I tested Cosmic with POP when I was testing so many distros as I finally migrated to Linux from Mac in 2025. For now though it’s not quite there yet for my needs, though I do continue to return to look at its progress with anticipation every so often.
